The alternative to our synthetic ECOmat is a wooden mat. Wooden construction mats are affordable and work perfectly when they are new. They are initially strong and very durable. However, as they absorb liquid and chemicals, they begin to rot, which decreases their useful life. The wood planks are also spaced slightly, and the mats have hollow cores. This allows them to fill up with water, chemicals and mud, which increases their weight, hastens the rotting process and could lead to site contamination if the mats are transferred and used in a different location. Once the mats reach the end of their useful lives, disposing of them properly is very expensive. Many of them end up in landfills or are burned, potentially causing environmental pollution.
